The Storied Life of A.J. Flikry

The Care and Management of Lies by Jacqueline Winspear

A World War I novel by one of my favorite mystery authors! This time, the author of the Maisie Dobbs series gives us a glimpse into the lives of three people dealing with World War I. Kezia, a city girl left running the farm, Tom, her new husband fighting in the trenches, and Tom's sister and Kezia's best friend, Thea, driving an ambulance in France. A moving story.

The Storied Life of A.J. Flikry

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

Wonderful! A love letter to the joys of reading. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book about a quirky, young widower who opens up his bookstore and finds a two year old toddler left in his care. An intriguing plot with a cast of lovable characters centered in a bookstore. What more can you ask for?

My Salinger Year by Joanna Rakoff.

My Salinger Year by Joanna Rakoff

This is the story of a special year in the life of the author---working in a well-known literary agency in NYC that just happens to have J.D. Salinger as a client.  I was quickly drawn into Joanna’s life at the agency, her radical boyfriend, and her apartment with no heat.  But what kept me turning the pages were her experiences with “Jerry” and his work.  Don’t be surprised if you end up dragging out your frayed copies of “Nine Stories” “Franny and Zooey,” and of course, “Catcher in the Rye.” For book lovers!

Amazement by Amy Tan

New Life, No Instructions by Gail Caldwell

This is a beautifully written memoir.  Full of Gail Caldwell’s candor, humor, courage, and search for self-knowledge.  An amazing story that leaves you entertained and inspired.  Just as good as Let’s Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of Friendship.

Amazement by Amy Tan

The First Phone Call From Heaven by Mitch Albom

Really his best book so far! I am not a Mitch Albom fan, but this book I found truly uplifting and thought provoking. Citizens of Cold Water, Michigan start receiving phone calls from heaven. How can that be? Part mystery, part character study, but overall entertaining!

The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan

The latest novel from the New York Times Bestselling Author of The Joy Luck Club.  This time around Tan focuses on the amazing, difficult, and short life of a courtesan.  Violet, the main character, was raised in the best courtesan house in Shanghai.  The madam is Violet’s American mother.  This is an incredible story of Violet’s initiation into the only life she will ever know.  An epic, intriguing novel.

If you enjoyed "Paris Wife," this book is for you. A real page-turner about the true-life love affair between Sigmund Freud and his sister-in-law. A fascinating look at love, loyalty, and betrayal.

Longbourn by Jo Baker

Longbourn by Jo Baker

An eye-opening look at what was happening downstairs during Pride and Prejudice. While Mr. Darcy was wooing Elizabeth upstairs, the small staff of five downstairs was cooking and cleaning, just trying to make it from one day to another.  Romance, intrigue, friendship, and loyalty soon develop.  Truly enjoyable historical fiction filled with memorable characters.

Light in Ruins

Reverb by San Francisco Bay Area author, Jeri Cafesin

A page-turner!  Almost from the start, I was intrigued with James, the main character, as he fights to recover from a twisted past.  He soon meets Elisabeth and her small son who are getting over a major loss.  A fascinating story of letting go and starting over.  There are a few small torture scenes, but they are pivotal to the story and should not deter the mature reader from delving into this unusual story.

Light in Ruins

The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert

An entertaining read for fans of historical fiction. This is the moving saga of Alma Whittaker, who avoids the traditional roles open to women in the 1800's by becoming a brilliant scientist. A careful telling of a woman's emotional and geographical journey as she explores her world. Beautiful prose.

The Rosie Project

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

The best romantic comedy I've read in a long while. This is the laugh-out-loud story of the socially inept Professor Don Tillman and his scientific quest to find a wife. Surprise surprise…his computer questionnaires fail and then he meets the incomparable, unique, Rosie. Just a delightful read with in-depth, lovable characters.

Light in Ruins

The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian

A real page-turner!  Another book by one of my favorite authors and this one is historical fiction—even better.  The story takes place in both 1943 and 1955.  A mystery and a family saga that begins in the last years of WW II and ends in 1955 with the murder of two family members.  Thrilling!

Inferno

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, by Anthony Marra

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra is a powerful novel of sacrifice and enduring love. This is a haunting tale of a young girl, saved by a kindly neighbor, and raised by a fearless doctor in war-torn Chechnya. Although the subject matter is stark, this novel provides an extraordinary reading experience about people and a country left forever changed by war.
